Government Urged to Strengthen Maritime Safety and SAR Systems

Jakarta – The government is being urged to strengthen maritime safety systems as well as search and rescue (SAR) capabilities. Such strengthening is required across the board, ranging from vessel seaworthiness inspections to the provision of equipment support for the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas).
Basarnas recorded 601 SAR operations related to maritime accidents between January and August 15, 2026. These operations involved 3,607 victims; of these, 3,165 individuals were successfully rescued, 239 lost their lives, and 203 remain missing.

These figures were presented during a joint meeting in Jakarta involving Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), the Ministry of Transportation, and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
